They are adapting.
Question, in the novel did the demons ever successfully communicate? At least more than making threats? So far the only signs they are thinking beings is the adapting when they first fought the witch nation (forgot the name!), pictograms they used to threaten and promise non-combatants, and when the the Dream world – assuming the destructive entity they confronted there is also a demon.
